Two things spring to mind:

Contactors are generally capable of opening far greater amperages than a 
semiconductor without getting stuck on.  As such they make better safety 
shutdowns.

Contactors provide isolation between the coil and the contacts. 

There are "solid-state" relays available that do offer isolation, but 
they are hard to find in DC or in high amperages.
