I realize that I was not clear about my earlier question.  I'm asking 
about the Solectria Gearbox vs. a Manual Transmission.  It's not really 
a "direct drive" since it has a ratio (I believe 10:1) but is involves 
fitting the axle halfshafts instead of adapting the motor to the fly 
wheel.
