Charles,
  While a motor at each rear wheel is very interesting, I hope to avoid unsprung weight.     Rear wheel hop going over all those ridiculous 6-inch tall speed bumps placed all throughout creation does lots of nasty things to mountings which support unsprung weight, much like impact wrenches use intertia to loosten bolts.  But that's still an interesting concept if the motors, controller, etc, would fall within some level of acceptable costing, and the motors were light enough.  
  Gearbox drive losses might also be somewhat of a factor against distance, but tentatively, 8 sealed orbitals at about 55 amphours plus one for controlling seems to be how this first motorcycle is shaping up.  The ATV's at Woods Fun center had rear suspension components which I will need to go back and study.   If there is any datum anywhere  regarding MTBF (mean time before failure) for differentials (at driven weight), or design specs, those would be helpful also.
