Dan,
If the controller and motor can accept more power, then have
you considered a capacitor in parallel with the battery
pack?

Note the internal impedance spec. Two or three of these in
series connected in parallel with the pack should
theoretically give you incredible boost AND they will cause
your batteries to last longer since they would experience
shallower current draws. You might even be able to get away
with implementing high capacity wet cells and still get the
desired street performance.
