Oh I don't really mean that. I don't think having a generator on an EV 
is a good idea. I was just thinking of conventionally hooking up to the 
grid (or an off the car generator) in general (say from coal) as a 
viable alternative for some transportation solutions since it seems 
unlikely to put a coal fired steam cycle in a car (but obviously done in 
train locomotives in the past!)!

In genera, yes, I'd like to cars to be as clean powered as possible (say 
an EV from renewable sources), but having a diversity of sources for 
powering cars (say EVs through various electricity sources: coal, 
natural gas, wind, solar, etc.) inherently builds a lot of redundancy 
that is good.

I'm not specifically promoting putting gas/diesel generators on vehicles 
or anything (at least for energy storage for EVs). My guess is it takes 
too much space, is too heavy to make any practical use to increase 
range. That's basically what PHEVs are for: combining a combustion 
engine and EV motor in the same drive train. that definitely saves gas.
