Josh,

Interesting to note on this topic - the Tesla roadster is currently delayed
due to transmission problems.  They put a two-speed transmission in there
and the first two designs have not been able to stand up to the abuse of
shifting with such high torque.  They did this because they wanted the best
of everything - lightning fast acceleration, high top speed and good
high-speed range.  Had they gone with a single-speed transmission and a gear
ratio in between these two (but closer to the lower), they would likely
already be in production.  Sure they would have given up some of the specs
that make the Tesla a supercar, but it has cost them greatly in perception
and confidence, as well as cost Martin Eberhard his job.
