[ausev] Going in Reverse?

Hi John,

Most conversions that keep the manual transmission, but don't use the
clutch still shift. A manual transmission will shift without the
clutch, it just takes longer.

If you're using an electric switch to control forward/reverse either you:

- have a direct drive setup with a DC motor where the motor goes
directly to a differential. Your only option then to get the car to go
in reverse is get the motor to run backwards. This can be done with an
extra pair of contactors that reverses the field or armature current,
but not both. If you reverse the current in both, the motor runs in
the same direction.

- have an AC drive, in which case the motor doesn't care which
direction it runs, it's entirely software controlled and the switch
just lets the motor controller know which way you want to go.

Hope that made sense! Please reply if it doesn't.

Erik
