Typically, the heater core is replaced by one or more ceramic heating
elements like those found in small 120V AC powered cube heaters. The
elements work just as well on DC as AC, and provide instant heat. In
some situation people will keep the existing water system, and use a
water heater element to warm the coolant. This is more complicated, and
takes much longer to start outputting heat.

but salvaging them from cheap cube heaters ($25 at end of season sales)
works nearly as well.
