We could let Mark Kapner correct us on this (if he were still on the 
list), but as far as Austin Energy goes, I think the coal and nuclear 
are still running at night, with the coal throttled back (less 
efficient) as determined by the quantity of wind power and demand. In 
conversations with him, and in looking at the GREET model of Argonne 
Natl. labs (which does exactly this calculation for the entire energy 
chain for fueling cars and can be downloaded for free), there are 
emissions benefits. The main thing is that emissions are easier to 
control at larger central plants and in the end less expensive.
