Turns out the mild Saturn hybrid announced at the LA Auto show was not
in fact GM's much rumored grid plugable hybrid. The vehicle announced
today at the Detroit Auto show is the Chevy Volt, a compact car similar
to their Cobalt sedan.

Official specs are 40 mile pure EV range, using a 120kw.161HP AC motor
and Lithium Ion batteries. The gas engine is a 71hp, 3 cylinder
connected to a 53kw generator charging the batteries. (There is no
mechanical connection between engine and wheels)

GM claims that the vehicle is headed for showrooms but is offering no
estimates on when it might be available, citing issues locating a
suitable supplier for the batteries.
