One thought would be that the "clunk" is the main contactor. They might disconnect the main pack from the controller when the accelerator is at idle for some time period..
Being clutchless does complicate shifting, does it have the normal 5-speed from the original car? Do you have any indicator for motor RPM? They probably assume you will pick a gear and use that all the time rather than shift. You would need the motor speed/torque curve and some indication of motor RPM to know if you were running in the most efficient range. At least if you had some indication of engine speed you could get used to matching the RPM to downshift. You will probably find that third works well for most of your driving needs.
