I agree with Aaron here ... Having done assemblies both horizontally
with a fully articulating transmission jack and vertically on the
ground, vertically just seems a lot easier. And it's definitely best to
have someone around to help lift the transmission into place, although
yours may be small enough to be manageable by one person.
Make sure the clutch disk is exactly centered in the clutch, and with a
bit of jiggling to get the splines to engage, the stack should settle
together.
The Advanced DC motors are a little weird to set upright, due to the
(inexplicable) shape of the commutator end, with its two bolt hole
positions sticking up 90 degrees apart. For the other side, use a piece
of 3/8" plywood, and the motor will stand up and be stable.
Let us know if you need help with it, and/or need to borrow an engine
crane.
Alternatively, the long bolt idea sounds like it might be a great way to
get the job done horizontally, if the transmission is still in the car
and you don't want to bother with removing it. I haven't done it this
way, but I'd be interested to see how it goes.
