[ausev] Installing A/C?

Mark, thanks for the offer of time this last weekend. My father was visting
and didn't leave until Sunday evening. Meanwhile I did get a change to
check out vintageaire. I like your idea about salvaging parts from other
Ford Escorts. My car has a fan and heater, but obviously no A/C components.
There are two salvage yards near me. I think I will take a look this
weekend. Meanwhile, I may go with the portable unit for now to deal with
this summer and give myself time to check out other systems for the future.

Oddly enough, I don't know of anyone in Austin that has actually done it.
We have one certified AC technician in the group, who would probably be
happy to charge and test the system once it is installed. I assume that
since you have a JET Electrica, it probably has none of the parts for an AC
system.
You'll need to basically purchase the entire system, probably from a
retrofit company like VintageAir http://vintageair.com. Expect to pay around
$1000 plus installation. Their "universal" system will need to be fitted
under the dash somewhere. I think the Jets came with no heat or cooling, so
there is probably space under the passenger side.
(Actually, some had gasoline fired heat, how weird is that?) The only "EV"
part you'll need is a small motor matched to your system voltage which can
be obtained from eBay.
Otherwise, you can find the same model car as your EV is built on, and try
to salvage what you need.. this will be cheaper, but difficult because of
the age of your vehicle.
I can help you measure for the system if you can spare some time this
weekend. I left my number on your voicemail.
