Many of us went to see this vehicle at a PR event in Dallas a little
while back. The AltairNano batteries use a "nano-structured lithium
titanate spinel oxide (LTO)" negative electrode instead of graphite,
which seems to be the main innovative feature of the product. More info
can be found on the manufacturer's site:

Lithium ion batteries in general are available to those with extremely
deep pockets. Hopefully this will change in the coming years, but for
the moment the AltairNano and A123 cells are not cheap. The ones that
people seem to be having some success buying are the Valence U-Charge
and the chinese ThunderSky cells. The Valence product, though lower in
performance, is probably the best deal going today as they contain an
integrated battery management system -- they're a more or less drop-in
replacement for lead-acid batteries.
