Apparently Ford came around and told the Mayor how entirely swell a Ford Escape Taxi fleet would be.

As I understand it, the Taxi commission in New York has to approve each
vehicle model for use as a Taxi. You cannot just paint a car yellow,
stick on the required medallion and take it out. It appears that they
were approved in 2005, but uptake has been slow. (Cabbies, like many
industries, are slow to adopt new things)
