If you do decide to go through the process
Toyotas tool box for some of their cars and your mr2 are shown here along
with the number to order tools.

Also if you intend to order the spx/otc equivalent. I believe some major
auto parts companies carry equivalents to these or rent these like carquest
or napa. Need to call them.

I do not have a good feel for the cost of tools.. Toyota's instructions
list about a dozen special tools required, but at least half of I think
generic equivalents are available. (For example, one of the SST's is an
oil seal puller, which can be purchased in a kit from almost any auto
place). The hard part is I need to walk thru the instructions and
figure out which tools I need, which tools I can make, and which ones I
have to purchase.

A good introduction to the process is here:

This is a rebuild of the C52 transmission, which was standard on the
non-supercharged version of the MR2. I have a E51 transmission which is
slightly more complicated (adds an oil pump, and a limited slip diff).
His required SST's worth over $600, which is getting close to the cost
of rebuilding the transmission.
