The study is trying to compare lifecycle costs, mostly how much energy
goes into the manufacturer of the vehicle, vs lifespan. Essentially the
study takes energy input during manufacturing, and divides that by the
number of the mile the vehicle is expected to be driven before being
discarded.

In this case the study assumed the lifespan of a Prius to be 103,000
mile before it is junked, the Hummer, 300,000 miles. Repeated questions
from the eco-press asking where or what method they used to derive those
numbers have been met with no response.

First rule of statistics, check the assumptions. Second rule, you can
do a lot more by changing the denominator.
