Apparently the Recorder is a dirty rag. An admittedly brief search on the internet about the Sudbury nickel plant seems to show that the area is being recovered.

Another site pointed out that Nickel, as well as being a part of the hybrid battery, is also used in all modern steel. So does your car have steel in it? Even if there where no increased demand for the batteries, nickel demand would keep the Sudbury mine and other operations around the world going along.
I wonder why someone went to the effort to write such drivel. I am sure that a "Total Impact" study would be of great interest and provide a lot of fodder to the debate.

Ive seen this article other places but heres a link to one of them. Apparently it takes more energy to make a prius than a hummer.
