This guy has a shop on Burleson Road that he is making into a sort of
automotive co-op. I saw his ad in craigslist and contacted him in order
to see how his operation might mesh with our interests. Maybe we should
arrange a group visit. His focus on education and cooperative support
sounds like a good fit. Too bad his place is located down south on
Burleson Road instead of here up north (a personal perspective).

Derek,
If you guys want to build an electric Porsche 914. I have a car
for you. We can also make space for your club. Austin's Half Fast Garage
will soon be incorporated as a non profit with a focus on education and
cooperative support. We have to charge for what it costs us to run the
garage and the fees we charge are going to be based on costs plus
contingencies. Right now it looks like $150 per month for an open bay
with air and power and $200 per month for a bay in the quonset hut. We
have room to park vehicles (open air) for $35/month.
The garage has 220, but no three phase. If the City of Austin will work
with us, we will get 3 phase down the road, but for now, I am not going
to fight with them. We are ready to start building 12 open air garage
bays. Open, but with a roof and a place to lock up some stuff. The Q-Hut
has an engine build room that will soon be dust free and air
conditioned. We have one 7hp air compressor on line and a 10 hp
compressor to be installed in a few weeks. We have a spray booth and are
adding a media blasting booth with a reclaim pit, a powder paint booth,
a powder paint oven and a powder paint oven for frames.
The goal with the garage is to provide a place for enthusiasts to work
on vehicles safely and efficiently with the assistance of fellow car
nuts. I can not tell you how many times I have hurt my back because I
did not have help lifting or moving something. We are creating classes
in welding, sheet metal fab, paint and polishing with a goal to provide
a class for every skill that a car guy could need. We will have a tool
crib for tool loan and rental. We will also have a library for research.
I would love to meet with your club and pitch what we can do for you.
The garage is still working on getting liability insurance and
incorporation in place, so there are no formal member as yet, but I hope
that we can get all the detail stuff done by the end of April.
The shop is at 5708 Burleson Road and my son and I will be out there on
Sunday working on his mustang fast back. Would love to meet you and show
you the place.
