Hi,
My name is Alisaba. I just became a member of Ausinev today! My interest
in this topic has been growing over the last year. A few months ago I saw
"An Inconvenient Truth" and last week I saw "Who Killed the Electric Car"
which has jump started me into looking for a local group of like minded
folks. I just moved to Austin about 8 months ago.
As far as creating a utility company giant, yes this could be the result.
However, Austin Electric has a rebate program for its users who convert
their home to solar. You can get up to $13,500 and additional rebates of
about $2,200 for energy star appliances and thermal solar. If you are an
Austin Energy or TXU user the city of Austin also gives rebates but I think
all of their rebates are associated with water conservation, possibly the
thermal solar qualifies. Check out both of their websites for details.
www.austinenergy.com <http://www.austinenergy.com/> and
www.ci.austin.tx.us/watercon/default.htm. Oh yeah, and there is a federal
income tax deduction for solar conversion as well. It is about another
$2,000. Al Gore is spear heading federal mandate for utility companies to
pay individuals who put kW into the system. Austin Energy also just started
a rebate that allows their users who have solar to expand their kW, e.g. so
if you have already converted your home to solar and received the rebate but
the system only covers 75% of your average monthly usage and you want to
expand to a larger system, you can do so and qualify for another rebate.
Wow! What more can we ask for?
Anyway my point is with electric, the dependency is not inherent.
Have a peaceful and prosperous day!

Treating others justly while on your journey is the best way to appreciate
what you
have when you arrive and to make sure someone is waiting, when you get
there.
