While I appreciate the idea here and the gist of Rob's point, I'll take
this opportunity to remind everyone that concern for our environment is
not the only reason we advocate electric transportation. National energy
security, the technical challenge of building an electric vehicle, the
thrilling torque of a high-performance EV, the greater physical
simplicity
and more easily understandable maintenance needs of an electric motor
and
batteries, lower noise, smoother acceleration -- all of these may be
among
the reasons why any given person here would like to build, buy and drive
EVs, and not all concerns apply to everyone.

The assumption that most people are interested due to environmental
concerns is pretty easy to make, and is most likely true. The assumption
that *everyone* in this community is driven by this cause is something
that has ignited nasty flamewars in the past.

For the record, I agree with your sentiments, Rob. Environmentalism is
the
first reason for my personal interest in EVs, and I suspect the same may
be true for the vast majority of members here.

However I think we'd all like anyone with an interest in EVs to feel
welcome to this group and on this mailing list, regardless of their
reasons.
