The motor on my little beetle truck is one of those surplus Jack and Heintz G-29-88 shut motors. Currently the heavy leads are connected to B+ and the – side of the controller with a jumper going from B+ to the left hand terminal of the field winding, the right hand terminal is not connected to anything.

It works fine when it is warm, even though there is very little low rpm torque. I spin it up with the clutch in and then drive like a regular car. Lately with the cold mornings when I apply throttle, nothing moves at first. It sits there pulling about 100 amps for up to 30 seconds, then very slowly starts spinning. Once it is up to working rpm it drives fine and after warming up it spins up from 0 rpm quickly like normal.

My question is what would happen if I connected the right hand field winding to M- perhaps through a high watt wound resister to limit the current?
