Yes, I know that the clutch is also a safety device, but surely there's
another way that doesn't weigh 30lbs and diminish performance! Or is there?

Keep in mind that the clutch is the ultimate safety device - it provides
an independent mechanical drivetrain disconnect. You don't need it but
it provides an extra level of safety.
The ElectroAuto 914 battery boxes are designed to be bolted in and they
look like a nice design. We just finished Luther's 914 battery boxes and
if you don't mind cutting into the rear trunk space, it provides a lower
and more evenly spread weight distribution. It still provides easy
access to flooded batteries (seems like the best choice) but the
batteries sit much lower overall and four were moved to the very back
instead of the forward fuel tank area to keep it balanced. It's not done
and working yet but it'll be running soon. They are not insulated or
fully enclosed but it may be worth a visit to get some ideas for
different layouts.
