You generally do not need a tranny for an AC system which offers
better continuous torque, this also provides better uphill climbing
power as well as the possibility of regenerative breaking. Many
factory manufactured EVs have this type of system, until you get into
higher speeds neccesitating more gear ratios. The Tesla Roadster for
example, (correct me if I am wong) had a single speed initially due to
manufacturing problems, but reach it's true performance goals it has a
2 speed tranny now.
