I have to clarify, I was not distinguishing AC versus DC for usage of
a transmission. Both work, there is just not much of a need with an AC
motor unless as Ken points out it is for convenience. I was just
pointing out induction AC motors are better suited for high speed
operation (over 2500 rpm) than a brushed DC motor and experience no
commutation, there isn't much need for a tranny when this is the case.
