Thanks for all of the Diesel Electric Locomotive info John... that was
fascinating.

The Zilla motor controllers for electric cars will control a pair of
DC electric motors to run in series on startup, and switch to parallel
as the sweet spot of the voltage curve is met.  (The Zilla motor
controllers are meant for drag racing.)

I can hit 70mph in 3rd gear in my car... but you are right, had I the
space and desire to go faster... I could use 4th or 5th gear to go
faster.   (However I really do not trust my tires above 80mph at the
moment.)
