Gil,

Yes, mine is also a a 1997 Chevy S-10E Pba, but my batteries are dead.

I have talked with Jeff and will be sending my truck to him for rehab later this year.

I think Solectria or US Electricar also used S-10E to describe their S-10s.

Greg

Hi, Greg--

We have a 1997 Chevy S-10E bought heavily used in 2004 with severely depleted PbA batteries which steadily got worse.? In 2006, Jeff Thomas (http://evbones.com) upgraded it to NiMH, improving the range from 5 to 50 miles.

Is yours a 1997 Chevy pickup?? There's another brand with the S-10E model number out there somewhere.

There is a downside to NiMH.? The batteries have to be cooled while charging, which brings into play the heat pump compressor and a whole lot of equipment that uses up energy and can go wrong.

But it's great transportation.? We generally prefer it over our ICE alternative, and we can drive solo in the carpool lane here in Los Angeles.

Gil,

?

Those Rav4EV owners are lucky.? I am in a couple of groups that have a number of Rav4EV owners, and they are daily drivers and do have more than 100k on them with no problems.

?

What kind of truck do you have?? I have an S-10E that I will be switching from Pba to NiMH later this year.

All this? advice on batteries and discharging, sulfation and stuff
applies to Lead-Acid batteries.? Does this advice apply to the newer
chemistries, Nickle-Metal-Hydride and Lithium-Ion?

I had to replace the 26 Lead-Acid batteries in my truck with 26 NiMH
ones at 16,000 miles.? Couldn't get new ones, so got some used ones
with probably 30,000 miles alraedy on them.? I'm up to 27,000 and see
no sag in performance yet.? Those lucky Rav4EV drivers who got to buy
their cars must be pushing 150,000 miles now, some, at least, with
the original NiMH batteries, as far as I know.? Anyone hear different?
