Unfortunately, neither of these techniques would apply to our purposes 
(for which Aaron sent the request in the first place).  We'd like to 
digitize the transmission shaft and bolt pattern to make a relatively 
accurate record of the relative geometry. We're attempting to record the 
data at an accuracy of approximately 1 to 2 thousandths of an inch.

Having this information means that adapters can be produced directly 
from our data, and this data would not be valid if it were gathered from 
a paper copy, or from some sort of gasket that had a chance to flex or 
bend while in transit. There's also the issue of the depth of the input 
shaft, which ultimately determines the thickness of the spacer that 
separates the motor from the adapter plate.

(For the record, I am not familiar with any transmission-to-engine 
assembly that involves a seal or gasket anyway, maybe there are some 
examples I haven't seen).
