[ausev] Austin AC conversions.

Some years ago, Mark Farver, myself and a couple others did a conversion
of a Ford Ranger using an AC drive from Metric Mind; it was done for
someone in Waco. The process did not go totally smoothly, but the
difficulties weren't related to the quality of the system or its
applicability to a conversion of that scale. The result was a pretty
decent conversion and was very fun to drive in my opinion.
The Cherokee you reference was converted by Nick Viera, formerly of
AustinEV and one of the founding members of the San Antonio group ACEAA
(www.aceaa.org); he's since moved on to college in Illinois. I visited
on weekends to help with the project, so I know a bit about it.
Performance is good, range is not stellar but that was expected given
the platform and the retention of the 4WD drivetrain.
The EV I'm building for myself will be direct drive. NOT a good option
unless you're going to be using a very large, very high torque motor,
and a high ratio in the rear end.
