Only generic information, the technology used in electric drill speed
control is all transistor controlled and by using phase shift data, can maintain
speed under changing load. It is either ac or phase shift chopped dc which turns
out similar infunction. The new 9 to 21 volt battery packs are Lithium ion
and are amazing, don't lose charge over time, work great and recharge time is
very short now.
In 1965 I worked at Sperry Phoenix on an autopilot system with the
electronics for yaw control by a dc motor using phase shift, for B-52 and Boeing 727
aircraft autopilots. Using chopped dc, transistor switching time was
nanoseconds, no heat loss, and feedback (Back EMF phase shift) from motor current
allowed us to drive the motor whereever we needed at any temperature or load.
My prejudice says that ac induction motors with no brushes, no heat loss
from control circuits, feedback for auto correction of control setpoint, and
great battery current flow and temperature monitoring, has to be the way of the
future.
Our '04 Honda Civic Hybrid uses this technology and in cruise control we
stay at 71.5 mph up and down mountains passing trucks, ford explorers, everybody
else while we are going over the hills with 43 mpg. average. Toyota Prius has
different implementation of electric motor usage but does same thing overall
with 45 mpg.
Good luck finding open market products for ac control, The software and
sensors are very sophisticated but great.
PS, I retired after 38 years in the process control instrumentation
industry. There is very sophisticated control software in use in chemical plants for
real-time control like we need for cars. It will be available one of these
days in all cars.
