[ausev] Looking for terminology and examples for hybrids run off generator as primary

A hybrid that gets it's electricity from a generator is called a series hybrid. This is because the flow of energy moves in series from the gas to the mechanical motion of the generator, the the electrical energy and finally to the wheels.

This Wikipedia article talks about hybrid types. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_hybrid#Series_hybrid

This list is mostly concerned with pure electric vehicles, but if you search the archives you will find previous discussion of this kind of hybrid. Specifically there was a discussion about not using an off the shelf generator as they are very polluting. Generators are not held to the same environmental standards as auto engines. Someone pointed out an alternative that would have lower emissions. I believe it was something you would get for boats, but I don't remember.

Another thread talked about whether or not a series hybrid would actually be more fuel efficient then a vehicle with an ICE.

My hope is to power the motor with electricity from the generator and
supplement the peaks with power from the batteries...or just use the
batteries for trips under 10 miles or so. Is there a particular name
for this kind of hybrid? I want to do more research. Also if you
know sites that have models of this kind of hybrid. I am trying to
make a few major decisions now: 1. What size motor I will need? 2.
What is the minimum number of batteries I will need 3. What is the
smallest size of generator i will need.

It would be helpful if there was some kind of open source simulation
software available to test these decisions.
