I have heard it called a range extended electric vehicle.

THe best example I have seen is a Toyota Rav4EV that I think was call "Long Ranger".

The Rav4EV had a smal trailer that held a generator that was used to charge and thus extend the range.

...and we are in luck I still have a link to the web page and it is still there...

My hope is to power the motor with electricity from the generator and
supplement the peaks with power from the batteries...or just use the
batteries for trips under 10 miles or so. Is there a particular name
for this kind of hybrid? I want to do more research. Also if you
know sites that have models of this kind of hybrid. I am trying to
make a few major decisions now: 1. What size motor I will need? 2.
What is the minimum number of batteries I will need 3. What is the
smallest size of generator i will need.

It would be helpful if there was some kind of open source simulation
software available to test these decisions.
