[ausev] question about estimating charge level by voltage

I understand that a fully charged lead acid pack is 2.15 volts per cell or for my 48 volt stack full charge is about 51.6 volts  I also understand that when the voltage gets to the nominal voltage of 48 volts it is about 50% gone and it is time to recharge.  

What im not sure of is how long after applying load to the battries do you check the voltage to determine %charge left.  For instance after driving all day the moment I stoped the voltage was 47.6,  within a few minutes it was up to 49.  Was I below 50% or in good shape?
