[ausev] Hoping for some answers

Thanks for the generous offer. I am in a research phase right now but would be very interested in seeing if the motor would work for me. I may be able to get the pieces made I need. I just need to figure out what I would need. One of the obvious draw backs of this project is the price. Your offer is a big help with that.

I am interested in doing this for a few reasons.
1) I am tired of taking the mower to the shop because the ICE won't start.
2) For environmental and political reasons (I drive a diesel Beetle running on biodiesel, looking at making that myself)
3) Cool learning project.
4) Fame and fortune

If I can meet 3 of the 4 above I would be happy.

I have been very impressed with the responses so far. They have been very honest in the feasibility of doing this and have provided me with the information to start my mind working on how to do it. Thanks everyone for your input.

I have a 5HP golf cart motor lying around here somewhere you are
welcome to have, if I'm remembering correctly. It is designed to plug
into a differential and does not have a front bearing or endplate.
If you have access to machine tools or a machinist friend you could
make one up. You can get away with just using a contactor trigger off
the pedal for start and stop, and use the transmission to change
speeds. You'll still need to find batteries.

In general though I would not recommend doing a project like this for
any other reason than fun. If your goal is to get your lawn mowed a
new engine is cheap and fast. You could easily spend a couple of
months trying to get the tractor working on electric.
