[ausev] limiting current to field in series wound dc motor

It has come to my attention that one can increase the speed of a series
wound motor if the field is bypassed via a shunt once the motor comes to
speed. This may possibly get you a few more rpms in these motors and
increase efficiency by reducing back emf in the motor and and not generating
heat in the field. Any thoughts on this, and has anyone implemented this
using any kind if transistor circuit or switch that is speed controlled?
