where all the performance EV people "hang out."

I suspect you just missed the Wayland Invitation IV.  These events are a 
tremendous wealth of information because that is the national gathering of 
performance oriented EV's.  It is an annual event that is held, generally in 
July, at the Portland International Raceway in Portland Oregon.  Heidi and I 
attended this year and for someone interested in performance EV's, it's like 
Charlie going to the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory!
