I have just read about the new Tesla's single speed transmission ( 8.2752:1
).

I have also seen talk of electric cars that sport the electric motor in side
of the wheel right next to the brakes. This eliminates the need for the
drive train at all. I know all this means the use of an AC motor and lots of
$$$$$$.
I have also seen this new concept car called the X-1, raced against a
Ferrari and a Porch and it beats the crap out of them.
Keeping this in mind, I can't help but wonder ( or wish ) if there is anyway
to eliminate the transmission out of the gas to electric conversion,.... Are
there any differentials that would serve as a single speed reduction like
the Tesla transmission. Is that a stupid idea,...?? Does the Tesla use their
8:1 single speed trani in conjunction with a x:1 differential? ( 8+X : 1 )
What I hoping or thinking about is connecting the motor directly to the
drive shaft. But, many of you have said in the passed that when you consider
connecting the motor to the drive shaft, the existing transmission serves as
a means to easily couple the motor to the drive shaft. One of you said that
the Trani serves as a safety divice to disconnect the motor if needed during
driving.
I don't know what is out there as far as parts for coupling the motor to the
drive shaft, if any. I don't know if what I am talking about is out of the
question.
And would you need a differential the size of the ones used on simi tractor
trailers just to get the right ratio,.. maybe not that big, but maybe you
know what I mean. Its ok to tell me to keep dreaming.
