When I was planning my electric car... I actually priced out using
rechargeable AA batteries for my car. The cost/benefit analysis makes
it an attractive option. For 5x the price, I get a battery pack that
lasts twice as long for half of the weight. (The lead acid and AA
batteries are listed as having the same kwh... but in a lead acid
battery, only half of the energy is usable thanks to Peukert's Law.)

US-8VGC batteries (144 volt pack)
  18 x $72.95 = $1,313.10
  18 x 64.50 = 1161.00 lbs
  18 x 170Ah x 8v = 24.48 kwh

AA size NiMH batteries (144 volt pack)
  10200 x $0.67 = $6,834.00
  10200 x 0.06 = 632.40 lbs
  10200 x 2.0Ah x 1.2V = 24.48kwh

Sub C Power Tool NiMH cells (144 volt pack)
  5760 x $2.00 = $11,520.00
  5760 x 0.12 = 708.48 lbs
  5760 x 5.0Ah x 1.2v = 34.56 kwh
