With environmental concerns and the uncertainty surrounding fossil fuels
becoming an increasing challenge, consumers are searching for vehicles that
offer a genuine alternative to gasoline-powered transportation. Until now,
limitations on speed, range and hill climbing capability have kept these
vehicles from achieving practical real-world performance and mainstream
acceptance. The NuVinci CVP addresses these limitations. It is affordable,
advanced technology that improves performance by keeping the vehicle¹s
engine gas, electric or human working in its optimal range.
The NuVinci CVP Developer Kit is part of Fallbrook¹s continuing effort to
stimulate innovation in vehicle design. ³The time is right for building a
new generation of cleaner, more efficient and more economical vehicles,²
said William G. Klehm III, president and CEO of Fallbrook Technologies.
³That kind of innovation starts with individuals and small companies who
have the courage to think differently. Our Developer Kit is designed to make
their job easier, accelerate development and offer a solid competitive
advantage.²
The NuVinci CVP uses a set of rotating and tilting balls positioned between
the input and output components of a transmission that tilt to vary the
speed of the transmission. Tilting the balls changes their contact
diameters and varies the speed ratio. NuVinci technology is the most
practical, economical and universally adaptable continuously variable
transmission (CVT) for human-powered and motor-powered vehicles and
machines. Current commercial applications of the NuVinci CVP include
bicycles and light electric vehicles. Other commercial implementations are
in various stages of development.
Since entering the market in 2007, the NuVinci CVP has won five major design
and innovation awards. These include the iF Design EUROBIKE Gold 2008 Award,
a prestigious R&D 100 Award as one of the year¹s most technologically
significant products and also won the Netherlands¹ Fietsvak Technology of
the Year Award. The first NuVinci-equipped bicycles also won the Popular
Science Best of What¹s New (Grand Award, Recreation) and Fietsvak Bike of
the Year award.
