Depending on how the boxes are being held up, you may find 1" wide to be
more than sufficient.
It's mild steel, so to weld it you'd just use common steel filler. My
TIG rods are ER70S-2 and my MIG wire is ER70S-6. There's a little bit of
difference between these alloys, but not much, and probably not enough
to care if you see one available and not the other. If you're using gas
or stick, I'm not sure what is typical.
