We usually have the transmission and the motor out of the vehicle when we are putting them together. Is that how you are doing it? If so, we have had good luck "stacking" them vertically.

One way or the other, having some help can really make life easier. I would be glad to come help out if you need a hand.

between the motor and tranny they need to be pretty well lined up in
order to start. Once they get lined up they should slide together.

I really like Jack's idea of using long bolts for alignment, then
pulling it all together.

If you are using a clutch, I assume you will have an input shaft from the transmission that needs to line up with the coupler (or flywheel) on the motor. Have you aligned the clutch plate with the pilot bushing on the coupler or flywheel first? They make plastic dummy input shafts just for this purpose.
>
> Other than that, if you can get them close, get a couple of extra long bolts the same thread pitch as the ones you will use to bolt the transmission to the motor adapter. Put those in first to act as guides to keep everything lined up while you work on sliding the two together.
