There isn't anything magical or complicated about a controller. I'm
building my own from scratch with pwm. The battery controllers and
monitors etc. are all separate as far as I'm concerned and will be
dealt with on an individual basis. I don't see anything wrong or
dangerous about a motor controller that only speeds up a motor and
decelerates when your input is told to do so and as far as I'm
concerned I can always add to my controller as needed and keep the cost
under $100.
The control software is very complicated, especially in life or
death applications like cars. Hopefully you can find some inexpensive
controller, with sensors etc, and menu driven software, so it will run
all the basic functions, you will just have to provide specific
information about your vehicle etc.
