That sounds really interesting. It sounds like what we already do with the vacuum accumulator for the brake assist. I would be interested to hear if anybody tries this or has seen this on a car/EV.

/Aaron

Just a thought but I would expect the transition from power assist to no power assist could be disconcerting at best, dangerous at worst, if it happens unexpectedly or in a less than predicatable manner. I would opt for a simple on dash toggle over any type of momentary switch. Give yourself an indicator light to tell if it is on or off (as a reminder to turn it off while cruising). Save the power assist for low speed manuvering like parking or downtown driving.

On a different note, since hydraulic assist works by pressure differential and at rest (or in a straight line) excess pressure is simply bypassed through the pump, would an accumulator tank and pressure switch achieve the same goal? I am picturing an air over oil tank to store power steering fluid under pressure. When you have used the system pressure down to a fixed level by steering input, a pressure switch activates to run the pump long enough to pump the accumulator back up.

I'd considered using my clutch pedal to activate the P/S pump. Since I'm clutchless, it currently hangs dejected near the brake pedal and gazes longingly at the accelerator. I find it easy enough to go without P/S, but it would make a difference for my wife.

That power steering draw is nuts. Installing the relay to shut it off or going to a manual steering rack would probably get you a noticeable range boost in cold and warm weather. My Lectra loses a bit of range in colder weather. The cooling fan for the motor and controller does not come on which makes up for some of the capacity loss. Also since it is a motorcycle I rarely ride it in really cold weather. Turning off my headlight is probably a similar drain to your steering in proportion to battery capacity and doing so makes it pull hills better after a few miles. Storing and charging in a somewhat heated garage also helps a lot.
